Articles & Posts

I'm currently writing about and exploring various aspects of creativity and what it means to those of us who have spent our lives living and breathing this endless pursuit. I belong to two publications on Medium (BootCamp, Digital Products & Innovation) where I periodically post perspectives and ideas.

A Creative Thought On Leading

PUBLISHED: August, 2024

Excerpt:

I’m a couple of years off from a milestone in my career. Soon I’ll take the precipitous step over the cliff and begin the unknown, but hopefully just as exciting, third decade of my professional creative career. So many hours are spent in one creative application after another, pushing pixels, adjusting colors, fidgeting with leading or kerning, or fighting for the right way to articulate the abstract. Countless meetings, stand-ups, reviews, feedback sessions (… and more meetings) were spent deliberating and “unpacking” (read constructively criticizing) creative brilliance and missteps. Looking back over those years, it’s profoundly apparent to me that there is no chance in hell that I would be where I am, doing what I am doing, and as successful to the degree that I have been without the leaders who have brought me along on their journey.

Everywhere and Anywhere Creatively

PUBLISHED: April, 2023

Excerpt:

For as long as I have been working in the creative profession (nearly two decades… yikes), my teams, colleagues, peers, clients, and mentors have been spread worldwide. I, for one, think that makes me a very fortunate creative. I am grateful for all the connections that I have made. I am lucky for all the people from different cultures, communities, and lives who influence and share with me alternative perspectives I would not have gained exposure to had I stayed in my neat little bubble. More importantly, a life lesson was bestowed on me at an early(ish) age. It has guided my professional life and how I manage globally staffed teams. Creativity is not something that is only found in certain locations or specific types of people. There is not a country that has ownership over innovation, there is not a culture that can think differently to a greater degree, and there is not a lifestyle that can lay claim to being the most gifted or imaginative. This floating rock in space that we call home contains just over 8 billion of us and we all have the same penchant for creative thought.

Cultivating Creative Culture

PUBLISHED: March, 2023

Excerpt:

Not too long ago, I was asked how I might infuse creativity into groups, teams, and environments that are not usually seen or immediately understood to be creative. Additionally, or more importantly, how can we break down the barrier or reluctance to think differently and welcome a culture where creativity thrives in every nook and cranny of the business? This is a question or concern I’m sure many leaders, executives, and managers wrestle with frequently. It’s an important worry to have and a large problem to solve but a solution is necessary since innovation and differentiation are often the results. I didn’t have much time to think about my response but in the few seconds that I did have, I decided to respond with an unorthodox answer. I started by saying “I don’t know if this is the answer you want to hear but you have to be ok with failure…”

Purpose of Down Time

PUBLISHED: February, 2023

Excerpt:

The pandemic was tough (epic understatement!). It tore through the entire world with unrelenting havoc, forcing every single person to deal with it, adapt to it, or change some semblance of their own lives. Some changes were small and have barely gone noticed, either by ourselves or others. While certain other changes were so titanic they still stand out like a wedding dress at a funeral as we attempt to get on with our lives. As a creative director and someone who thrives off of being creative in most of my daily life, it feels like the latter most days. For many of us, the sudden shift in the ways, worries, and wares of our daily lives have left us in the midst of an unrecognizable routine. Aspects of our previous lives that we simply tolerated, avoided, or ignored are now scars or wounds that have gone unattended and are beginning to sour or sting. It can be felt everywhere. At home, in our commute, in our relationships, and at our jobs where burnout and resignations have risen to never before seen levels.

Many companies over the past couple decades have successfully brought the notion of design thinking to the forefront of business minded people. No longer can something simply do what it says it does. It must now be the best, most ground-breaking, or far-fetched futuristic concept no one has ever imagined. They’ve branded the idea that creative led ideation drives innovation, unique thinking, and out-of-the-box solutioning. They are not completely wrong. Creative thought, paired with other attributes certainly can result in all of that. Still, all these ideas associated to a creative’s magic make the executive suite drool over the prospects that only those mythical dreamers can deliver the next big thing.
