Oil on Canvas 36" x 36"
There is a lake in Colorado, near Leadville, that I’ve visited a couple times this past year. I dream of a day when, if I am lucky, I will have a small house to escape the worries and stress that follow me in my daily life. Having only spent a few hours on this lake, I am forced to imagine what sunsets might look like from the shore but if I had my way, they’d be filled with all kinds of colors.
The complexity of the darker clouds hanging above the lower but brighter storm clouds provided for an interesting challenge. By bringing the orange highlights underneath, I was able to tie the two different planes together and create a layered cloud scape. Additionally having the heavier and deeper clouds on top causes the viewer to pause and take in the unusualness of the cloud positions giving it a unique and intriguing aspect.
