Tall Mountain Clouds
Oil on Canvas 18" x 48"
I live near the mountains and try to spend as much time as I can in them. From my house, and while I am walking around my neighborhood, I have this view of Mt. Evans. It is always inspiring to see the storms coming in over the peaks, building pressure and strength, set against such imposing structures. I like the juxtaposition of the mountains (who always seems so heavy and large) dwarfed by the clouds (who in their very nature are lighter than air).
The tight vertical nature of the piece was a new challenge for me when creating an expansive landscape. Instead of spreading the building storm horizontally (like I have in other paintings), I thought I would make it a grand and towering cloud structure that commanded the majority of the canvas. Balancing the large amount of white and lighter blues with the heavy and dark mountains grounds the piece and makes you understand that there is more hiding off the edges of the painting.
