Oil on Canvas 40" x 30"
A tornado can be a troubling thing to witness on the horizon and while I've seen many funnel clouds in my life, I've never stood and watched such a distructive force move through the lives of others. The dichotomy of a storm being made of the smallest particles, held up by an incredibly forceful wind and the emense power and terror it can cause is an absolutely intriguing and captivating aspect of nature. I wanted to capture that tension.
Showing the scale of the storm and how it can make the landscape seem so small yet so vast was my goal for this piece. By having it dominate the upper two thirds of the canvas and breaking the horizon line delivers it's impressive size. Tornados rotate at insane speeds but so do the clouds above them and this gives this painting a feeling of movement and rotation.
