Travel is a necessary part of my job and with that I spend a lot of time in a plane. This time gives me the opportunity to reflect and think about the recent past and my coming future. As many people do when they are lost in thought, I stare out the window and the passing views and I’ve noticed that I am fortunate to be able to witness such incredible sights. For this series, I plan to paint views from all over the globe from the perspective of the plane. This location is of Chicago, just before sunset in late fall.
Sunsets are always different and in this case, the mixing of the subtle gradient from blue to red on the left but also the shift from a clear gradient to a lost sunset in the smog was important. Additionally, trying to capture the sense of the lights just turning on and the streets beginning to come to life helps to convey the time of day. Using a central point for the perspective helps drive the viewers eyes into the vanishing horizon.
